Migrating and Upgrading to Joomla! 5.x • Re: Currently 3.10.12, should I migrate to 4 or 5?

Some great general tips, thanks both, much appreciated.

I don't have any third party components that aren't my own, so nothing to worry about there. However, I've spent the morning reviewing the com_banners source code to get an idea of how much difference there is between the 3.10 architecture and 4.0 ... wow, I hope all the re-factoring was worth it, 'cos this is a totally different product. I estimate it'll take about twelve months to re-write my code, so I guess I might as well target 5.0.

I have to say feel the same frustration as I felt moving from 1.6 -> 2.5 ->3.1 back in the day: the technical Joomla documentation for component development is as execrable as ever. In nearly half a century working in IT (and eight years of writing Joomla code as a pastime) I've never had to use such a shockingly badly documented product  I'd write the documentation myself if I had any time left after all the hours it takes studying source code to find out how it's all supposed to fit together!
