Maybe a workaround:
With the 3rd party extension Akeeba Backup you can create backups of your website (files and database).
You can exclude specific directories (like /images/ ) from those backups.
And with a Linux tool like "rsync" you could synchronize ("backup") the files from /images/ to an external server.
